Throwback Joint Of The Day
If you are a fan of house music then you should know this song. It is one of the few house songs that still gets a lot of good responses on the dance floor. Here is Aly-Us in Follow Me.
Laugh Of The Day
Here is another clip of Bro. Franklin gettin' his dance on during offering at church.

Throwback Joint Of The Day
We are going to go back to 1992. This group won over fans and critics with their afrocentric theme and positive sound. They won a Grammy for best new artist that year but had trouble reduplicating that success. One of the singers of this group later went on to start a solo career and contribute a song called Hopeless for the Love Jones movie soundtrack. Here is Arrested Development in Tennessee.
Laugh Of The Day
Here are some funny clips from Family Guy and it involves the weatherman for Quahog news Ollie Williams.
Gosepl Sunday
This is another new segment to the blog and I will be posting one Gospel song every Sunday. For today's first installment we are going to go with a song from a sister duo who first burned up the gospel charts in the early 00's with their song Shackles and eventually the song crossed over onto the R&B charts. They can be seen as judges on BET's gospel reality show Sunday Best. Here is Mary Mary with God In Me.

Throwback Joint Of The Day
In celebration of Michael Jackson's birthday we are going to pick an album cut from the Off The Wall album. I always felt that the hidden gems on Michael's albums have been the album cuts and this song right here could have easily been a single. Written by Susaye Greene and Stevie Wonder here is Michael Jackson with I Can't Help It.
Happy Birthday Michael
Today would've been Michael Jackson's 51st birthday. Celebrate the life and memories that this man left on earth and not dwell so much on what has been said about him in the press. R.I.P. Michael.

Throwback Joint Of The Day
One of the most successful duo's of all time. Hailing from Philly these blue eyed soul brothers had hits such as I Can't Go For That (No Can Do), Rich Girl, She's Gone, Private Eyes, and the list goes on and on. Right now they are still touring and now a whole new generation knows the meaning of blue eyed soul. Here are Hall and Oates with One On One.

Classic Group+Classic Song=Classic Album. Off their 1965 album Rubber Soul here are The Beatles with In My Life.
Laugh Of The Day
Here is a clip of Jamie Foxx (before he really crossed over into the mainstream)doing a bit on HBO's Def Comedy Jam.
Europeans appreciation of music
For some reason it seems to me that Europeans have a deep appreciation for music in general instead of being fickle and only liking a particular type of genre like their U.S. counterparts. I believe it is probably because European media is not as big on the idea of force feeding the same artist(s)/song(s)on the television or radio. A lot of American acts have found more success overseas rather than in the states and instead of trying to tour in the states they just stay over in Europe where they will receive more money and recognition for their talent rather than compromise their talent in order to fit in that tight little box of what would work in the American music industry. So for that I say much respect to all Europeans and music fans who have a true appreciation for what music is.

Throwback Joint Of The Day
This song was just one of the many hits this former drummer/vocalist of Genesis had in the 80's and it received more exposure thanks to MTV and the NBC cop show Miami Vice. With its haunting melody and eerie video it has truly become an 80's staple and a song you would play while driving around at night by yourself. Here is Phil Collins with In The Air Tonight.
Laugh Of The Day
Here is a throwback In Living Color sketch featuring Homey The Clown. Homey don't play that!!!

Throwback Joint Of The Day
This joint right here is not really known by mainstream hip hop fans but it is well loved by fans of underground hip hop. This song came off of the 2004 album Connected and features vocals by Darien Brockington. Here is Foreign Exchange in Come Around. (Shout out to all of NC)

Laugh Of The Day
I know you have seen the clip but this goes to show what happens when a freestyle battle goes wrong.
Roxanne Shante
If you don't know who this woman is then you are not a true hip hop fan. Roxanne Shante was a part of Marley Marl's juice crew which featured Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie, MC Shan and an assortment of other MC's. She came on the scene after cutting the diss record Roxanne's revenge which was a response to Roxanne Roxanne by UTFO. After cutting a few more records she got out of the game and went to school for free. You want to know how she did that? Due to a clause in her recording contract it states that the label had to pay for her education for life. Not only is she one of the most well respected female MC's of all time but she has the Ph.D. title by her name. She is the prime example of making the game work for you and not the other way around. Much respect and props to the old school that paved the way.

Throwback Joint Of The Day
This song was popular around 1996 and it continued the dominance of Bad Boy during the late 90's. Here is 112 feat The Notorious B.I.G. (R.I.P.) and Ma$e with the Only You (Remix).
Concert Review
Last night I attended a concert in Ahoskie, North Carolina in which the R&B group Next and Slim from 112 performed. When my friends (They work for the local radio station in my area 99.5 Jamz) and I went up to the venue the show had already started but the show had to be moved inside to a theater downtown because it was raining and the original was to be outside at this amphitheater. When we got the opening act was already performing and was towards the end of his set, so once he came off stage the host of the concert started to interact with the crowd by dancing to some old school songs in which me and my friends were laughing at due to his selection of dance moves. After that lasted for about 10-15 mins. Next came out and IMO (In My Opinion for those that don't know) had the best set of the night. They ran through their hits and songs that they wrote for other artists. Of course all of the ladies rushed the front of the stage like it was showtime at the apollo. After Next performed out came Slim from 112 and his performance was hit and miss as the crowd was into it at times and other times felt bored. After going through his material and 112 songs the show was over due to Christopher Williams not being able to make it due to getting caught in bad weather. Overall the concert was good and the venue felt more intimate due to the fact that there was really no separation between the crowd and artists. I enjoyed myself and to me that was what a concert is all about and that is giving people a good show.

Throwback Joint Of The Day
This white guy had some serious soul. This song came out in 1986 and was an r&b/pop hit. He is now writing songs for the successful High School Musical franchise. Here is Robbie Nevil in C'est La Vie
The New Way
Attention all independent artists here are some tips to get your stuff heard in the age of new digital technology.
1. Take advantage of social networking websites to promote yourself (myspace, youtube, facebook, etc)
2. Make your album digital(All you have to pay for is the cover work and you can set your price per download, so whatever you make off the downloads goes directly to you and you don't have to go through a middleman.)
3. Build your base block by block( Start off in your area then build your name outside of your surrounding area and so on and so on.)
4. Connect(Remember the old saying it is not about what you know but who you know)

Throwback Joint Of The Day
This video is mainly known for its complex dance routine and its black and white cinematography. Tyrin Turner aka Caine from Menace II Society plays the boy in this video. Here is Janet Jackson in Rhythm Nation.
Soul Train
You know the name and the host. Soul Train has served as a cultural time capsule for African Americans for over three decades. This fall the show will be back on the Centric network which has been created by B.E.T. in order to cater the 25-54 year old demographic. Me being a long time Soul Train fan I'm excited but I'm hoping that it has the same feel like back in its prime during the 70's- mid 90's. Always wishing you love, peace, and sooooooooooooooul. Here is a clip from the early 90's.

Throwback Joint Of The Day
Back in the 90's remixes were at its all time peak and Diddy was at the forefront of that. Here is a remix he did for the Mary J. Blige and K-Ci duet I Don't Wanna Do Anything Else.
Long Overdue
Hey everyone I'm finally back after being away for 2 wks. and a lot has been going on since my last posting. I had a conversation with my friend named Andrew out of New York and he was stating that the current pop music landscape reminded him of the whole early/mid 80's new wave era where everything was driven by synthesizers and instruments like the TR 808 and 909 (Mainly used in house records). Listening to some of the snippets of tracks from Diddy's album Last Train To Paris while watching Making His Band you get a sense that he wants to be able to balance that line between creativity and constraint which means going left field but not too far so that he will alienate his fan base. I've always been a fan of that new wave sound because it was something so intimate and organic about it and you just can't get that nowadays with the whole studio driven sound. Hopefully this style of music will ring with a new generation and we will be partying like 1985 all over again.

Throwback Joint Of The Day
This is dedicated to the late John Hughes who is known for directing several classic 80's teen flicks like The Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, Pretty In Pink, and others. Here are Simple Minds in (Don't You) Forget About Me.
Sorry For The Delay
Sorry for the long delay but my computer is currently being fixed at the moment and therefore I have been without internet access since last wed. A lot has happened since I last posted an entry but I want to say R.I.P. to John Hughes and keep making pop culture history.

Time Machine Archives Vol. 28
For now this will be the last Time Machine Archive upload as I have more episodes but they are all on cassette tape and unfortunately don't have the equipment necessary to convert them to digital and I plan on doing that in the near future. Here is my series finale from May 15th of this yr. It was bitter sweet because it had been a good five yr. run and I hated to leave because of all the memories I had at WUAG. As for right now the show is on hiatus but you will never know when The Time Machine will be reactivated. Enjoy it and tell a friend!!!!!!!!!!!!

Throwback Joint Of The Day
This 4 brothers help bring teen oriented R&B back and they made major noise with the 1995 top 5 R&B/Pop hit Candy Rain but their next single continued their fast rise as R&B teen idols. Here is Soul IV Real in Every Little Thing I Do.
Laugh Of The Day
Here is Tommy Davidson doing a parody of MC Hammer in his prime back in 1990 on the groundbreaking show In Living Color. I felt that the show jumped the shark once The Wayans left thank God they put out the first couple of seasons on DVD.
The Boondocks
If you haven't seen an episode of this show then same on you. As it is a satire of what goes in within African American culture only those who are in the know will actually get what it is going on. The creator of the show Aaron McGruder stated that the third season of the show is currently in production and will air early next yr. I applaud the show for being brave enough to tell the truth in a time where the truth is considered a detriment to success when you are in an industry which pretty much runs off the steam of lies and on the wheels of bad press. I will now leave you with one of my favorite clips from the show.

Throwback Joint Of The Day
This song right here is 80's new wave staple. He produced a few cuts for the rap group Whodini back in the early days and appeared on Soul Train. Here is Thomas Dolby in She Blinded Me With Science.
Saved By The Bell

Whether you want to admit it or not you probably watched an episode of Saved By The Bell. This year is the 20th anniversary of the show and it is hard to believe that the show continues to still live on through syndication and the advent of the internet. Just recently People Magazine got together the popular kids from Bayside High for a reunion photo shoot (minus Dustin Diamond and Dennis Haskins) and everyone seems to be doing well. While Dustin on the other hand has grown reclusive to his castmates over the years and he is working on writing a tell all about his time on the show. I admit it SBTB is one of my guilty pleasures and as long as there are teenagers the show will live on because they talk about the age ol subjects that teens face like peer pressure, sex, getting that first pimple, etc. Even though the fashion is outdated and the dialogue at times cheesy the show managed to stand the test of time for all the reasons I've stated and here's to another 20 for SBTB.

Time Machine Archives Vol. 26
Today's Time Machine archive is going to come from one of my Time Machine mix shows.
The Time Machine Mix from Jarrell Mason on Vimeo.
Throwback Joint Of The Day
This group of white rappers had an odd name but this joint rocked the clubs in around 93. One of the members of this group had a role in House Party 2 and DJ Skribble was a resident DJ on several MTV shows in the late 90's/early 00's. Here is Young Black Teenagers with Tap The Bottle.
Laugh Of The Day
This is a funny Lay's commercial from 05. MC Hammer has a good sense of humor for doing this commercial after he had been the punchline of many jokes.
My take on disco
To some people disco sucked but to others it brought everyone together on the dance floor to get away from their troubles. In my opinion I thought it was good music to dance to and it actually forced the average joe who had two left feet learn how to do the hustle or any dance that was popular during that time. On my radio show I interviewed Tom Moulton who is considered to be one of the pioneers of what we now know as the remix and he said that the remix came about from the DJ's desire to keep the people on the dance floor for a longer period of time because at that time your regular radio single only lasted a little bit under 4 mins. The downfall of disco came in 1979 when Steve Dahl a radio personality for Chicago rock station WLUP staged a disco demolition night in the old Cominsky Park in between a doubleheader with the White Sox and Detroit Tigers and the fans got a little too carried away which forced the White Sox to forfeit the second game. Like any other music genre that gets too popular the major labels decided to saturated the consumer with disco everything, even having artists who were not labeled disco cut disco records in order to cash in. Even though some look at it as a dirty word but as I stated before it brought people together to have good time.

Throwback Joint Of The Day
Classic track by a classic group. This joint was produced by Dallas Austin and you can see a young ?uestlove from The Roots playing drums in this video. Here is Boyz II Men with Motownphilly.
Mr. Magic's Rap Attack
If you really love hip hop and know the words to Juicy by Biggie then you know who Mr. Magic is. If you don't then shame on you. He was the first radio personality to have a radio show which featured exclusively hip hop on a regular basis and has been name checked by a bunch of artists. Here is a clip of one of his shows. Listen and learn for those that don't know.

Time Machine Archives Vol. 24
Throwback Joint Of The Day
This joint right here brought the grimy sound of new york into the hip hop forefront. Here is DMX with Get At Me Dog.
Hip Hop meets Madison Ave.
I don't know if any of you guys have seen the new Taco Bell commercial where two white boys rap about tacos being on 89 cents and had all the hip hop cliches from the over sized jewelry, girls, etc. After that commercial was over with I said to myself that while hip hop music has been used to push almost every product under the sun this commercial made the genre and art form more slapstick. Madison Ave. looks at using hip hop music as a way to create a new niche market/demographic so that they can exploit them for monetary gain case in point Run D.M.C./ Adidas and the list goes on and on. Everyone was hating on MC Hammer back in the early 90's for doing commercials for Pepsi, British Knights, KFC, etc but in all actually hip hop was deemed safe for Johnny in the 'burbs to listen because of MC Hammer. Long story short Madison Ave. has been eatin' good off of the hip hop communities dollars for years but still some of the companies don't even kick back the money that they make to help enrich the community at large. Now being able to balance commercialism with intelligence would be ever so proper.
