Throwback Joint Of The Day
This IS how a show should be performed. Here is Hammer doing a medley of his hits on the Soul Train Music Awards back in 1991.
Laugh Of The Day
Wanna know what it is like to see a gang of people do the dance from MC Hammer's U Can't Touch This in unison? Well here is your answer.
Concerts
I know this is going to sound weird but I've never been to an actual music concert. Pretty shocking coming from a guy that loves music right? Back in the day when you would go to a concert you felt like you were getting your monies worth in terms of the amount of time the performer was on stage and the fact that you were entertained the whole time. Also tickets back then were cheap compared to the insane prices you have to pay now. Nowadays it seems to me a concert consist of no showmanship and I think we need to get back to that. People want a show and not just you performing to a backing track and having a large amount of your people as hypemen. There are still acts out there that gives good shows and I think concerts would be better off if everyone followed the advice that has been given.

Throwback Joint Of The Day
While we are on the underground tip for today here is a classic joint by A Tribe Called Quest. Here they are in Check The Rhime.
Go to the Underground
I was looking at old clips of The Lyricist Lounge Show(It was a show that aired on MTV which lasted for only one season) and it got me thinking about all of the great underground rappers that will unfortunately not get any love by the mainstream because they refuse to play by the rules. Wordsworth, MF Doom, Aesop Rock, Little Brother, Foreign Exchange, and the list goes on and on all have put out hot material and it is a shame that people who are not heavy into the underground hip hop scene doesn't know about them. Back in the 80's/90's you had acts that appealed to that type of crowd but they would be on one of the smaller indie labels and not a major but the change came when once the major labels saw rap music as a cash cow and decided to drain out the realness and make it more suitable for mass consumption. Enough of my ranting but in short go out and support your underground acts because they represent real and true hip hop.

Throwback Joint Of The Day
This is a classic song produced and written by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and they helped this group known for the new wave classic don't you want me cross over to the r&b charts. Here is The Human League with Human. (Performing it live on the show Top Of The Pops)
The Crying Game
There has been a lot of videos of celebs lately breaking down crying for the whole world to see and while we may not know what is going on in their personal lives, all we can do is pray for them and hope that everything will be alright. I had previously written a post about the price of fame and with all of the attachments that fame entails I would be shedding a tear or two (in the privacy of my own home of course).

This group from England had a string of hits in the U.S. in the mid 80's and along with Soul II Soul, Five Star, and Junior brought the British Soul sound stateside. Here is Loose Ends in Slow Down.
80's Commercials
Here is a montage of commercials from the 80's. To me I think this decade had the best commercials due to the catchy slogans and identifiable characters that came with the commercials. Enjoy.

New Music Industry
Gone are the days where you have to drive to L.A. or New York to shop your demo, now with all the new technology that is out there the playing field is now level for everyone. The new standard contract in the music industry is the 360 deal where labels are now dipping their hands into revenue streams which were once only reserved for the artist. Also digital albums are the new way to go as they cut out having the middle man distribute your album and you set your own price for the download. The biggie in that is all the money goes straight to you. New artist(s) out there follow this strategy and you will begin to make noise.

Throwback Joint Of The Day
This is for all my hair metal fans. This group came on the scene with 1987 with Appetite For Destruction and as they say the rest is history. Here is G N R with Welcome To The Jungle.
Microwave Music
Microwave Music is what I call music that is quick and easy to digest. It doesn't require a lot of thinking and once you hear that song you will want another one just like it. Majority of the music that you hear on commercial radio is made with that formula in mind and because of that music that has a deep meaning or message gets unheard due to the dumbing down of mainstream music. I don't want to sound like I'm preaching to the choir but that is how I see it.

Throwback Joint Of The Day
I just recently found this cut after it was played on one of the America's Game features on NFL Network. He is more know for the songs Danger Zone and I'm Alright but this song is blue eyed soul at its finest. Here is Kenny Loggins with This Is It.
Laugh Of The Day
The Boondocks is very hilarious but you gotta be in the know to understand what is so funny. Check this clip out of gay rapper Gangstalicious video for Homies Over Hoes.
Why
Why did Solange had to go bald? Why did Cassie, LaLa, Rihanna, and Christina Milian had to shave one side of their heads and look like two faced but attractive only on one side? I think this just screams attention and is not a good look. In my opinion this is an epic fail.

Detox
Hopefully this album will see the light of day this yr. and according to various websites they say that Dr. Dre and his crew are finally putting the finishing touches on the long delayed album. Dr. Dre is one of those rare breeds in where he can go away for a long period of time and come back to much fanfare. Me being a fan of music and of his work I can't wait for it to come out and hopefully the world will be ready for the return of the D.R.E.

Throwback Joint Of The Day
This is one of my favorite 80's song. It speaks about a girl coming of age while her dear brother is having a hard time of seeing his little sister grow up. This song received heavy airplay on MTV and was this band's biggest hit. Here is Night Ranger with Sister Christian.
Laugh Of The Day

Ax or Ask
We have always been taught when and where to use proper english and slang but now it seems like the younger generation are using more slang within a public setting where we know that using proper english is a must. We need to take it upon ourselves to correct one another if a word is improperly used or enhance our diction by subscribing to dictionary.com's word of the day. That's my short two cents but this video should explain what I'm saying in more detail.

Throwback Joint Of The Day
This song got a lot of airplay during MTV's early years and this band served as the pilot band for MTV Unplugged. This song was recently used in a Heineken commercial and is considered a new wave classic. Here is Squeeze with Tempted.
Laugh Of The Day
Here is why you need to get the song Banana Phone out of your head. (Shout out to Grogan crew from Freshman yr.)
Michael Vick
Michael Vick ended his sentence on mon. and is looking to apply for reinstatement in the NFL but he will have to sell to commissioner Goodell that he has changed his ways since being locked up for two years. I think he will be remorseful but Goodell doesn't want to have a PR nightmare on his hands by reinstating him too early so my verdict is that he will be suspended until wk. 8. He has paid his debt to society and has atoned for his mistake so he deserves another shot of redemption. The naysayers this time around will be waiting for him to slip up just so they can say I told you so. I also predict if reinstated he will play for the Pats because Bill Belichick is looking to cook up something to stop the wildcat offense that the Dolphins used on them last season. Vick to Moss sounds pretty good. Lets hope Vick gets another shot.

Throwback Joint Of The Day
This joint right here is a mid 90's hip hop classic. It has a laid back west coast sound and they pretty much were riding the wave of fellow backpack rappers like ATCQ(A Tribe Called Quest), De La Soul, Pharcyde, and others. Here is Souls Of Mischief with 93 til infinity.
Laugh Of The Day
Here is a spoof of Mr. Carter by Affion Crockett in where he portrays both Lil Wayne and Jay-Z.
Walter Cronkite
This man represented the way news is supposed to be brought to the American public and that is with honesty and integrity. He also represents an era lost in the cycle of 24 hour news outlets and instant news. The only way I could see Walter Cronkite is through archival clips on youtube as when I was born Dan Rather was filling in his shoes (Cronkite stopped doing the evening news in 1981). This essay which was written by AP writer Ted Anthony pretty much sums up what Cronkite meant to journalism and how so much has changed since then. Here is the link for it http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090719/ap_en_tv/us_cronkite_end_of_an_era read it and enjoy.

Actually I thought this was one of Shaq's best joints. Even though he a mediocre flow his albums had great production. This track was produced by Erick Sermon of EPMD. Here is Shaq with Outstanding.
Laugh Of The Day
This is more of a laugh for the sports fan. When you played football your coach always told you that you hold on to the ball until you cross the goal line. Well Dallas Cowboy player Leon Lett forgot that and thankfully they won the game.
Would You Pay The Price For Fame?
Me personally I wouldn't because imagine you not being able to do "normal" things like going out to eat, shopping, or even a stroll in the park without having people follow you. Now I would be as nice to my fans as possible but it is the paparazzi who makes being famous a headache. I was looking at Michael Jackson's private home movies special on you tube earlier today and he was saying how when famous people do something good the media won't cover it because it is not juicy and sensationalized enough for them to keep their ratings and viewership up. We as common people get caught up in all of the hype and perks that surrounds that addicting drug known as fame, but people were to see all of the problems and work that goes into it then maybe people will think twice before saying I want to be famous. Know that with fame comes Mo Money, Mo Problems.

This right here is one of my favorite songs by Wham. This was off the album Make It Big which really skyrockted Wham onto the American pop culture radar with songs like Wake Me Up Before You Go Go and Careless Whisper. It was also the beginning of George Michael's ascend from Wham pin-up to 80's solo superstar and sex symbol. Here is Wham with Everything She Wants.
The Late 90's/Early 00's Teen Pop Era
Backstreet Boys, *N'Sync, Britney, and Christina. Those were some of the acts that ruled the teen pop era of the late 90's/early 00's. To me I felt that era represented a time of innocence and good music. Most of these acts dominated top 40 radio and MTV during this period but it was only a matter of time before this pop bubble burst as labels started to saturated the market with boy groups and female pop tarts. In my opinion I think pop like that still can work but it has to be tailor made to fit today's young audience who are exposed to much more stuff that I was when I was their age. So before you admit to yourself why did I ever by that *N'Sync album just think about all the joy you had and do the dance moves to the video while you are at it.

Takin' you back to the old school with this one. This duo along with DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince made hip hop more acceptable for the suburbs. This was the song that started Kid N Play's roll in the early 90's as the crowned kings of hip pop from movies to commercials they were large. Now Kid is doing stand up comedy and Play is teaching a hip hop class at North Carolina Central University. Here is Kid N Play with 2 Hype.

Update
Sorry for not posting the past few days I haven't had internet access so expect more to come within the next day or two. The LAPD is now treating Michael Jackson's death as a homicide and two members of the Jackson family believe that foul play was involved in the death of Michael. Even though I'm a fan of MJ I just wish that the media would just let him rest in peace and not show wall to wall coverage of who is going to get custody of the kids and things like that. The family has already been through enough so just let them be normal for a change.

Throwback Joint Of The Day
This band hails from Buffalo,NY and did their thing locally before getting signed. In 1992 this song was featured in a highlight reel of NBA clips from the 92 season. Here is Joe Public with Live and Learn.
Laugh Of The Day
A flip out can be spotted no matter the language. Here is what happens when a German boy couldn't get his computer game to work and the keyboard took quite a beating.
American Idol: Gift Or Curse?
It has been debated about whether American Idol is considered a gift or curse for the music business. On one hand it gives artists who are just waiting for their big break a chance for great exposure but on the other hand it can stifle creative growth for an artist if they happen to make it in the later rounds of the show. If an artist makes it to the top five(someone correct me if I'm wrong) gets a deal with a label but the downside to that is you can't release your material until the winner and runner up do so. Therefore you will lose steam and then you will be rushed to get your album out before the new season comes out. While the show has proven to be a cash cow for Fox, it hasn't done enough to stop the internal bleeding in the music industry. At the end of the day it all depends on the artist and whether or not they want to ride the slippery slope which is American Idol.

Throwback Joint Of The Day
This joint was a real popular breakdance cut in the early 80's. From the group that brought you songs like Close To The Edit and Moments In Love. Here is Art Of Noise in Beatbox.

Throwback Joint Of The Day
Taking you back to the mid 90's on this one. This group pretty much carried on the tradition of young male R&B groups and just like The Jackson 5, they are brothers. Actually one of them is on the run from the law for identity theft but this joint was (and still is) a banger. Here is Soul IV Real in Candy Rain.
Soul Train's A Comin (To DVD)
When I first came across this article I was excited because for yrs. we have been waiting for this to happen but in the back of our minds we thought it would be all talk due to the legal issues that had to be ironed out before a DVD release could really happen. I Want My (Old)MTV Back
That slogan alone helped MTV go from being a guinea pig for this new medium called music videos to an instant cash cow during the early years of cable television. Now you have people who grew up with the channel singing that familiar battle cry which is MTV sucks. I agree with them because back when I was growing up my tv was either on BET or MTV and MTV had a wide range of shows to choose from like MTV Sports, Beavis and Butthead, Club MTV, etc. Now MTV had turned into RTV (Reality Television) but I guess MTV had to evolve beyond music videos in order to survive. What I think Viacom should do is created a classic MTV channel complete with retro shows, commercials, etc. Go to youtube.com to check out my interview with original MTV VJ Nina Blackwood.

Throwback Joint Of The Day
Back to the good ol days of bands and funk music. This band had numerous hits in the 70's/80's. Here is Cameo with She's Strange.
New Jack Swing
New Jack Swing was a meshing of r&b vocals with hip hop beats which was made popular in the late 80's/early 90's. Teddy Riley producer and member of the groups Guy and Blackstreet helped usher R&B from its adult swagger which consisted of serenading ladies and making music more suited for the bluppie (Black Yuppie) or an adult crowd to R&B which was more youth and street oriented. Several key acts emerged during this period and started to crossover on the pop charts. Around 1993 NJS went into the hip hop soul phase which meant a more grittier urban sound than its predecessor. NJS is fondly remembered for influencing urban culture in the late 80's/early 90's and the music brought together lovers of pop/r&b/rap. Go to http://www.njs4ever.net to find out more about new jack swing!!!!!!!!!!

Remixes
Good thing I grew up in the 90's because to me that was the era where remixes were at its peak. Remember when you would go to your record store and either by the cassette single or single cd and you would have remixes of the song you liked? I did and in most cases the remixed version of the song turned out to be better than the original. A remix in today's climate means just adding some new vocals over the same beat and keeping the hook but back in the 80's and 90's a remix meant making the original song even hotter by changing up the beat, new verses and hook, and adding some effects. I had a discussion with a friend of mine that is a PD at a radio station and he told me that remixes like back in the day (which were 6 mins.+) wouldn't survive b/c of the short attention span of the frequent radio listener. Hopefully the art of inventing the true remix will rediscovered.

Throwback Joint Of The Day
In honor of the late Michael Jackson here is one of my favorite cuts of his off of the Dangerous album. He got into the "swing" of things when he linked up with Teddy Riley for this tune. Here is Michael Jackson in Remember The Time.

Throwback Joint Of The Day
This song to me represents what was so great about mid 80's r&b which was a nice mellow grove, slick vocals, and tight production. Here is the BB&Q Band with Genie.
Where Has Good Music Gone?
I'll tell you where good music has gone to and that is to the underground music scene where the only way you hear about a particular good song or artist is through a live performance or word of mouth. The only outlets that "real" artist have nowadays is either college (community) radio or online radio because mainstream radio and the music industry deems their music not commercially viable because it refuses to follow the industry standard of dumbing it down for the masses. We have some talented artists like Alicia Keys, Maxwell, Jill Scott, etc that can be able to balance their artistic integrity along with having the product be commercially viable. Hopefully we can get that balance between music that is commercial and music that is "real" back soon because the kids of this generation are being forcefed music that is supposed to be hot by record companies and mainstream radio. Lets save the kids of this generation before it is too late.

The Time Machine
We are now getting ready to talk about the most important thing in my life. No not a girlfriend but my radio show The Time Machine. It started back in Sept. of 2004 at WUAG 103.1FM and I was nervous my first show because I thought that my CD's (yes I said cd's) were going to skip on me and that I would be a stuttering fool over the air but it turned out to be a smooth process. I've had the chance to interview major players within the music industry past/present like Donnie Simpson (BET's Video Soul), Danny Wood (New Kids On The Block), Maurice Starr(New Edition/New Kids On The Block), Coko (SWV), Mic Murphy(The System), and Nina Blackwood (MTV) just to name a few. I was excited to go and do my show every wk. for five years because I knew that the loyal listeners of Greensboro and throughout cyberspace would appreciate the music that I played. Upon graduating from UNC-Greensboro I gave my last broadcast of The Time Machine on May 15th 2009 but hopefully I plan on bringing back the show in an online fourm. So therefore every night I will be uploading two "Time Machine" shows from the archives. Sit back, Relax, and Enjoy.
Laugh Of The Day
When I first saw this ad I thought I wouldn't stop laughing. Thanks CJ for this one.
D.O.M. (Death Of Magazines)
With Vibe's recent closing this week it is safe to say that magazines are on their way out the door and within the next ten to twenty years will be considered outdated. With the economy sagging and low revenues coming from advertisers most magazines have been forced to cut back on the number of issues being put out a year, working only four days a week, and staffers saw a decrease in their salaries. We are living in a age where nobody really has time to sit down and read a magazine anymore, therefore we want our content to be available quick, fast, and easy. I think if magazines and newspapers would've embraced the internet a little earlier then you wouldn't see as may magazines and newspapers forced to close and/or reduce their workforce. Right now magazines and newspapers are on their last leg and it is only a matter of time before we see a flat line.

My Thoughts On Michael Jackson
Last Thursday the world lost one of the greatest entertainers of all time Michael Jackson. For my generation this is our where you were and what were you doing moment. While I wasn't breaking out the beat it jacket or the white glove like others. I just listened to his songs and was amazed at how he could take his emotions and make the listener feel what he is feeling when he sings every note in a particular record. While I came up on him from the Bad era up until his passing I went back and listened to Off The Wall and Thriller, then I really understood the true power of this man. What I really liked about Michael Jackson was how at one minute he could be all quiet and shy but when he gets on stage it is like another person takes over. What I learned from him was how to captivate an audience, give them show, and show a great amount of showmanship. I know he is up there resting in peace and moonwalking across the sky. R.I.P. Mike
BET Awards
I thought BET did a good job on changing the gears for the awards show but when I sat down in my room to watch it I couldn't believe what I was seeing. While Jamie Foxx did ok in spots most of his jokes were inappropriate for the show and it felt like he was bringing his Foxxhole routine to the show. I'm a big New Edition fan but felt like the performance could've been a little better because it seemed like maybe they didn't have the proper time to really get the routines down pack due to the short time in which they had to readjust the show. Whoever was operating the delay button needed to be given the Mike Biv(If you watched Making The Band you know what I'm talking about). Overall I think BET needs to reevaluate their method for putting together their award show and get back to having balance on the network with what is considered commercial and what is considered real talent. What are your thoughts?
Introduction
Well welcome to J_Mas's Corner. This is where you can find my thoughts and opinions on anything that is pop culture and related to music. I will also be uploading archival episodes of my radio show " The Time Machine" on here. A little about me. I'm a recent college graduate of UNC-Greensboro (Spartan Pride) and right now currently trying to get in this game that we call "The Job Market". I love music and radio with a passion and I hope to continue where I left off with what I was able to do in college with "The Time Machine" and my segement for Spartan Television called Music Beat. If you have any ideas or suggestions for the blog e-mail me at jarrell_daman@yahoo.com and I look forward to hearing from you all. God bless.
