New Jack Swing
New Jack Swing was a meshing of r&b vocals with hip hop beats which was made popular in the late 80's/early 90's. Teddy Riley producer and member of the groups Guy and Blackstreet helped usher R&B from its adult swagger which consisted of serenading ladies and making music more suited for the bluppie (Black Yuppie) or an adult crowd to R&B which was more youth and street oriented. Several key acts emerged during this period and started to crossover on the pop charts. Around 1993 NJS went into the hip hop soul phase which meant a more grittier urban sound than its predecessor. NJS is fondly remembered for influencing urban culture in the late 80's/early 90's and the music brought together lovers of pop/r&b/rap.
