Throwback Joint Of The Day

This song was a popular album cut off of this group's Gangsta Lean CD. The original version of this song samples The Time song Gigolo's Get Lonely Too but for the remix they made it more west coast with its laid back vibe and vocoder styling which is reminiscent of the late Roger Troutman. Here is the video for DRS's Skoundrels Get Lonely (Remix).

Throwback Joint Of The Day

This song was one of the many hits off of the sophomore album from the former New Edition member Bobby Brown. Don't Be Cruel was one of best selling albums of 1989 and he achieved even greater success outside of New Edition. Right now he is back (clean and sober) with Johnny Gill and Ralph Tresvant for the spin off group Heads Of State. Hopefully there will be another NE record soon. Here is Bobby Brown in Every Little Step.

Throwback Joint Of The Day

This female singer got her start back in the 70's as a Soul Train dancer and later became a part of the late 70's/mid 80's group Shalamar. After she left the group she went on to have solo success with hit singles like I'm Looking For A New Love, Still A Thrill, Don't You Want Me, and Some Kind Of Lover. This song that she did was one of the many trailblazing R&B records of the 80's to really mesh rap with R&B thanks to some verses by one of the all time great rap groups Eric B. & Rakim. Here is Jody Watley feat. Eric B. & Rakim with Friends.

It's Time

It's Time to put away the talk about the money, cars, and clothes in music

It's Time to start looking at ourselves in the mirror and ask ourselves is this how I want to be portrayed

It's Time to start uplifting one another instead of falling into the crabs in a barrel syndrome

It's Time to get up and get involved in our communities

It's Time to start having respect for our woman instead of degrading them

It's Time to be of service to our communities by helping any and everyone the best way we know how

It's Time for the kids of America to make their mark and shape which way they want the future to go

It's Time to get back to parents being parents and being role models for our children

It's Time to educate ourselves

It's Time to motivate ourselves

It's Time to get fired up and ready to go

It's Time for us to go out and change the world

It's Time to redirect life's compass and point it into a steady direction

PCF Question Of The Wk.

Ok guys if you have been following me on facebook then you know all about Pop Culture Flashback (PCF). I have decided to move it here to my blog but the only difference here is that it will be one question for the wk. Instant Success

Some say that success is fleeting but thanks to the internet and the new forms of technology, it can also be instant. Everyday you have millions of people hoping to become the next youtube sensation so that they can gain instant fame from doing something either very good or out of the ordinary. The downside of instant fame is that once your fifteen minutes is up then you will fade back into obscurity quicker than you can say Tay Zonday. Like I stated in a previous post if you want any type of longevity then you will have to work long and hard for it and be prepared to struggle because if you look at the stories of anyone famous then you will know that success doesn't happen overnight. Remember that you must prepare yourself for your destination and you can't get there by not being pro active.

Throwback Joint Of The Day

We are going to celebrate New Edition's number one slot on my R&B group list with a song that kicked off their coming of age as a mature R&B group. With the addition of established R&B singer Johnny Gill this song serves as one of their most popular songs to perform in concert and the dance moves from the video were imitated by guys everywhere who wanted to be smooth like them. Here is New Edition with If It Isn't Love.

Laugh Of The Day

Don't you know that bird is the word? If not then Peter from Family Guy will tell you so.

My Top 5 Male R&B Groups

This wasn't an easy task, picking five R&B groups to put on my countdown but here is my top five male R&B groups.

5.The Jackson 5-Two words Michael Jackson enough said

4. Boyz II Men- These four brothers from Philly brought back the acapella movement within R&B groups and experienced crossover success thanks to hits such as End Of The Road, On Bended Knee, I'll Make Love To You, etc. They actually had a hand in influencing Lou Pearlman to start Backstreet Boys once he saw their popularity with whites. Harmonies out of this world.

3. The Temptations- My Girl, Just My Imagination, Ain't Too Proud To Beg are some of the many hits that this legendary group put out over the years. They defined what an R&B should sound and look like.

2. Troop- I know some people are going to be like why Troop? I'll tell you why from the late 80's to the early 90's these brothers out of Pasadena, California gave New Edition a run for their money and really etched their place in R&B history with great remakes of All I Do Is Think Of You and Sweet November. They had style, can sing and dance. Not to mention a classic hit of their own with Spread My Wings.

and my number one R&B group of all time is......... New Edition- The only R&B that I know of where all group members had greater solo success outside of the group and paved the way for bands such as New Kids On The Block, *N'Sync, Backstreet Boys, etc. They had the look and choreography of R&B groups from yesterday and they can still pack out houses 26 years after their debut.

Since we are on the subject of rumors it would be fitting for me to go with this song by a group of guys from Berkley, California. Throwback Joint Of The Day

We are going to delve deep into the rich catalog of R.Kelly. This man has been cranking out hits since the early 90's and have had the ability to cross genres within songs. This song off his self titled album was in my opinion one of his best because he really bared his soul and had a real connection to the song. Here is R.Kelly in Trade In My Life.

Throwback Joint Of The Day

For today's throwback joint we are going to 1997. This song was from the Booty Call movie soundtrack and when I first heard this song I was floored once I found out who it was by because this group was known for such pop hits like Quit Playin' Games (With My Heart), All I Have To Give Larger Than Life, etc. This was right around the time when Backstreet Boys was starting to come back to America after achieving success over in Europe. Here are Backstreet Boys in If You Stay.

Chris Brown Interview Summary

I didn't catch the initial airing of the interview but caught it at midnight and I found the interview to be all hype because he didn't go into detail about the incident which was probably the PR thing to do when you are in the process of rehabbing your image after going through a crisis. This interview was carefully plotted by the crisis team and I'm sure he went through hrs. of going through predetermined answers but at the end of the day I think he will be fine and we should all let him live his life and stop being so judgmental when we really don't know the specifics.

Throwback Joint Of The Day

We are going back into 1993 for today's joint. This three man group from NY made a name for themselves by doing records for Jeff Redd, Shinehead, and Mary J. Blige before even doing their debut album. Once the album came out everyone knew that these guys were to be taken seriously. IMO they had one of the most slept on R&B albums of the 90's and it was a shame that they didn't blow up like they should have. Here is Intro in Let Me Be The One. (R.I.P. Kenny Greene)

Laugh Of The Day

Gotta love Dave Chapelle and his multiple characters. Here is an anti drug speech by Tyrone Biggums. Wish this show was still on the air.
